merck sigma-aldrich international gmbh

NOVOPLAST, Sial, Helbling and Metrohm have been working together closely to develop an intelligent chemical bottle closing system for Merck Sigma-Aldrich International GmbH.

The project at a glance

  • Complex coordination of the tasks and processes by four companies
  • Fulfilment of a large number of product and project features
  • 32 test and acceptance criteria passed with flying colours
  • Laying of the foundation stone for the components' geometry
  • Optimal coverage of customer needs through our wide range of expertise

Product

Since starting in 2011, NOVOPLAST, Sial, Helbling and Metrohm have been working together closely to develop an intelligent chemical bottle closing system with the name "iCap". The ten-part system consisting of a cap, adapter and communication interface is designed to, on the one hand, enable the chemical to dock onto the titration device easily, safely and conveniently and, on the other hand, allow for the exchange of data.

Challenge

Sigma-Aldrich Chemie GmbH has been part of the Merck Group since 2015 and specialises in developing, producing and selling chemical substances globally.

Metrohm AG is one of the world's largest manufacturers of high-precision instruments for chemical analysis.

NOVOPLAST is a manufacturer of technical injection-moulded parts and also offers the assembly and manufacture of units and system solutions.

Helbling Technik AG is an independent development and service company that, as a partner, supports its customers in developing innovative products.

  • Fulfilment of functional features (unlocking, opening, breaking open, docking, sealing, ensuring liquid withdrawal, undocking)
  • Fulfilment of handling requirements and defined use cases (ergonomics, use, destroying the label,...)
  • Fulfilment of features for data handling (writing/reading)
  • Fulfilment of process requirements and quality assurance features (transport safety, filling,...)
  • Compliance with relevant regulatory standards (certification)
  • Suitability for mass production
  • The absorber element for supplying the bottle with air is an integral part of the iCap and can be attached to it.

MU-iCap test and acceptance criteria
The test and acceptance criteria were recorded and signed in the iCap MU (multi-use) specifications
V 1 ++ (suitable for Karl Fischer titration). The requirements consist of 32 points from UR-1 to UR-32. In addition, further requirements of UR33-4 l have been laid down, but these are Metrohms's internal requirements for labelling, documentation and processing. These requirements must therefore be met by Metrohm itself and have not been taken into account in this document.

The test and acceptance criteria were defined and approved in the requirement specification. The requirements consisted of 32 points which were implemented within the project and integrated into series production.

Product solution

As an expert in the field of injection moulding technology, NOVOPLAST laid important foundations for the geometry of the components and recommended manufacturing solutions over a period of 36 months.

"As an expert in the field of injection moulding technology, Novoplast AG laid important foundations for the geometry of the components and recommended manufacturing solutions over a period of 36 months."

Thanks to wide-ranging expertise, close cooperation with partner companies and our plant in Hungary, Metrohm was able to optimally cover the extensive needs in regard to the production and procurement of complete solutions. The customer received everything from a single source, from complex components made of PVDF to a complete leakage test of the completely assembled ICAP.
